About two and a half years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a bi-lateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery over the following 18 months. I had never smoked and did not have a history of cancer in my immediate family. I had been on HRT, did enjoy a glass of wine or two and could have benefited from losing a few kilos. What caused it? Stress? Lifestyle? HRT? No one knows.
As I had a hormone receptive cancer I was placed on medication which would lower the risk of the cancer returning. This medication has been more challenging for me than the mastectomy ever was. It has side effects that have really impacted on my sense of cognitive and physical well-being.
I would love to see more research into how this life-threatening and life-taking disease can be prevented. I would love to see treatment options developed that don't plummet suffers into a quagmire of severe side effects and gives sufferers and their families greater certainty and hope of their survival. I would love to see myself a few kilos lighter, a bit fitter and doing something proactive to raise funds for breast cancer research.
I hope you can support the Cause by contributing a few dollars or pounds and as a means of encouraging me along the way. Many thanks. Janette Newman
